Cynefin (pr. kuh-neh-vin) is the creative vision of west Wales native Owen Shiers.
Fascinated by music and history, it is a bid to give a modern voice to Ceredigion’s rich yet neglected cultural heritage. Starting out from his home village of Capel Dewi in the Clettwr Valley and traveling through the local musical landscape, Owen unearths seasoned songs and stories, some never before recorded, and gives them new life in the present.
Nominated for three awards at the Welsh Folk Awards 2023, Cynefin gives Owen a platform to ply his intricate arranging skills whilst taking him right back to his roots.
Support comes from Awen Blandford, a dynamic cellist, singer and music therapist from Mold, North Wales.
Growing up immersed in traditional music, dance, and the Welsh language, she developed a deep connection to her cultural roots. Awen refined her skills at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music, where she discovered a passion for collaboration and improvisation.
As a versatile freelance session musician, she has performed with a diverse array of artists and bands, including Seamus Og, Anna McLuckie, Mikey Kenney, Marco Woolf, and the Untold Orchestra.
Drawing inspiration from her Welsh heritage, Awen is now focused on a solo project that delves into traditional Welsh songs. She brings these timeless melodies to life with the intricate and rich sound of her cello, creating a unique and captivating musical experience.
