Session A9 – 25 Years Later!
Over the last twenty-five years, Session A9 have earned their reputation as one of the best live bands in the country, adored by fellow artists and the wider public alike. It is no wonder they are frequently described as a “Scottish Supergroup”. A concert review in The Times quoted “Playing with zest, finesse, harmonic sensitivity and an element of cheek and mischief”.
The seven-piece band are Kevin Henderson, Adam Sutherland, Gordon Gunn and Charlie Mckerron on fiddles, David Robertson on percussion, Marc Clement on guitar and songs, and Brian Mcalpine on keyboards. Some are members of Capercaillie, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, Deacon Blue, Treacherous Orchestra, The Grit Orchestra and The Celtic Fiddle Festival, as well as others. “All the band members have very busy lives but the love of playing live music together keeps driving us and we want to do more”, says Charlie Mckerron.
Session A9 have recorded six albums, the most recent being The Magic Roundabout, which was nominated for Album of the Year at The Scottish Traditional Music Awards. This is not the first time the band have been involved in these awards, in 2012 they were honoured to collect the award for “Best Live Act”. Scottish singer/songwriter Dougie Maclean has been quoted as saying “Session A9 are the best band to come out of Scotland in 100 years” and The Proclaimers stated that they are “tighter than James Brown” after watching their performance at Glastonbury Festival.
