Banjos and rappers shouldn’t sound this good together but they do.
Bluegrass and Hip-Hop may sound like an odd combination, but critically acclaimed Gangstagrass make it work.
‘There are a lot more people out there with Jay-Z and Johnny Cash on their iPod playlists than you think.’
says prodcer Rench, who, before Gangstagrass, had previously made a name for himself as an in-demand Brooklyn country and hip-hop producer, and solo artist.
When he first shared Gangstagrass for free on the internet, the buzz occurred instantly and unexpectedly. Rench’s unique vision combined hip-hop MCs and beats in sync with banjos, fiddles, and dobros, and made the combination feel seamless, natural, and authentic.
The buzz around Ganstagrass hit full throttle when television network FX commissioned Rench to write the theme song to a new show, Justified. The result was ‘Long Hard Times To Come’ and in 2010 Rench received an Emmy nomination for ‘Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.’
Following the success of ‘Long Hard Times To Come’ Gangstagrass went on to record critically acclaimed albums featuring songs that appeared on well loved TV shows including Justified and Bones. Their latest album ‘American Music’ debuted at number 5 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts with singles being playlisted on radio stations across America.
With the influence and stature of these pioneers of a new American sound continuing to grow Gangstagrass tour to rave reviews of their incendiary live performances.
Rodney Branigan masterfully combines extraordinary multi instrumentalist skills with heartfelt lyrics and a rich soulful voice.
