Back in December, we were delighted to receive the news that we would, once again, be in receipt of funding from Youth Music, the national charity dedicated to developing young people’s opportunities and experiences in the music industry.
Since February 2025, we have been beavering away to put the groundwork into place for this exciting new project which builds on the success of our previous Youth Music pieces of work, Blueprint and No Barriers to enhance and grow the music provision that we deliver at The Met.
We are very proud of the learning that has come out of these previous pieces of work as well as other smaller projects that we have run, all of which have provided valuable intelligence to support us to develop how we as a whole organisation can support young people looking to enter the music industry. The first phase of this new project has seen us set up a new Young People’s Steering Group which is looking into how we can add to, improve and capitalise on the space we have available in our Creative Hub to be an accessible and inclusive space for young people’s music-making. This work is being led by our new resident artist Liam Frost.
Alongside this, the project will also enable us to incubate young professionals to develop their skills, try out new ideas and gain mentorship under the auspices of The Met. The first of these is Whitefield-based artist and practitioner Sonny Decieco who says…
I am joining the team as a Young Facilitator, to re-think youth engagement with music at The Met. I am extremely excited to help provide a unique platform which we will bring informal music practice into the space. I have a particular interest in group-based freeform sessions as a way to encourage “play”, nurture confidence-building in the youth.
If you would like to enquire about getting involved in any of this work, joining the steering group or becoming one of our young professionals, get in touch with education@themet.org.uk.
