Earlier in November, we were delighted to welcome back our mentees, supporters and friends to celebrate the work done on our No Barriers project.
No Barriers was supported with Youth Music and saw seven young professionals who identify as learning disabled, neurodivergent or chronically ill to explore skills development, confidence building and career pathways in the music and performing arts industry.
At the core of the programme was a longitudinal one to one mentoring relationship for the young artist with our lead facilitator Katie Douglas. Through this relationship a bespoke training and exploration plan was created, utilising the skills and expertise of Met staff members and external partners to help develop the individual’s confidence, provide new opportunities and plan for the future.
As a result of the programme various pieces of work have been created including short films, music videos, original songs and sound recordings.
At our final event on the 14th November, mentees shared their experiences, talked about what they had learnt and gained from the programme and shared their creative work to a supportive audience. The feedback and the love and appreciation in the room was really something and proved just what a special experience the project has been.
Although No Barriers is over, we are now working with new partners The Learning Foundary and FutureYard to deliver the Soundcheck programme, a 16 week taught programme in music technology and event production for over 19s. For more information on this scheme, click here.
