An International Cultural Exchange celebrating disabled creatives.
Ruth Lyon, from the United Kingdom, and Eliza Hull, from Australia, met in Austin at SXSW 2022. They connected over the shared experience of being disabled artists working in the music industry, and the pressures, barriers but also empowerment that comes with it. In 2023 they are working together on a cultural exchange, touring the UK and Australia, performing, and sharing their experience with audiences, venues and aspiring artists.
Ruth Lyon, influenced by acts such as Fiona Apple, Aldous Harding and Regina Spektor, explores themes of self-doubt, insecurity, emotional masochism, and the weight of arbitrary expectations – all unravelling through offbeat, sophisticated chamber pop and anti-folk, commanded by her soulful vocals and witty yet raw lyricism. Ruth is also an ardent advocate for the disabled community through her work as an ambassador for Attitude Is Everything – a charity that aims to improve accessibility for Deaf and Disabled people in live music; Lyon herself has been a wheelchair user since the age of twenty one.
Eliza Hull is an award-winning musician. Her music has been described as ‘stirring, captivating and heartfelt’. She is regularly played on radio nationally and internationally including on ABC, RN, BBC, double j and triple j. She recently performed her new song ‘Running Underwater’ on ABC’S Q & A and performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas and Big Sound Festival to showcase and present a panel on accessibility.
